Local History

High Coniscliffe, a picturesque village in County Durham, has a long and fascinating history rooted in its riverside setting along the Tees.

The village is recorded in the Domesday Book and has been shaped by centuries of farming and rural life. St Edwin’s Church, dating back to the 12th century, stands as a testament to its medieval heritage.

St Edwin’s Church is dedicated to Edwin of Northumbria, who proclaimed himself overking of England and converted to Christianity in 627 AD. While it is believed an earlier church may have stood on the site, the present limestone building dates from around 1170. It features a Norman carved archway under the north porch, a nave, chancel, north aisle, square tower and octagonal spire.

The tower, built between the Norman and medieval periods, includes Gothic elements such as the chancel arch, supported by carved corbels.

The east window contains fine stained glass. The church was enlarged in the 13th century with the addition of the spire, and restored in 1892 when new seating, flooring, a screen, altar and clock were installed at a cost of £600.

Some sources, however, suggest the restoration occurred in 1844. Since 2009, the church has been roofed in stainless steel.

Over time, High Coniscliffe has retained its traditional charm, with historic buildings, green spaces, and a strong sense of community linking past and present in this enduring parish.
