Do councillors get paid?
Councillors do not get paid. The role of the clerk is a paid role. The clerk is paid by the parish council to carry out the day to work of the council.
What is a parish council precept?
Parish councils have the right to raise money from our parishioners by the council tax process. A part of your council tax is levied by the parish council to raise funds enabling the council to effectively carry out its duties.
How do you become a parish councillor?
Parish councillors must be age 18 or over and live in the parish. If there is more than one nomination for a place on the council a vote will take place. Councillors can be co-opted onto the council if there is only one nomination.
What do the parish council do?
We meet once a month and make all kinds of decisions on matters which affect the local community. We are statutory consultees on all local planning issues. We manage community assets.
What are the council’s powers in planning applications?
The parish council is a statutory consultee in all local planning applications. We do not however have the power to approve or reject applications. We can comment on applications during one of our regular meetings which are all open to the public.
Can the parish council give money to charity?
Councillors can carry a motion to donate to a charity during a meeting. There is a limit to the amount.
